Essential Monuments and Places to Visit in Lisbon<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Lisbon Cathedral<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Santa Maria Maior is the most important cathedral in all of Lisbon. Known as the S\u00e9 de Lisboa, it is one of the city’s must-see sights. The Lisbon Cathedral \u2014 or S\u00e9 Cathedral \u2014 in Romanesque style, is one of the unmissable visits in the Alfama neighbourhood. It is one of the few monuments to have survived the successive earthquakes and fires that have struck the city.<\/p>\n

Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery in Lisbon is one of the capital’s principal monuments. It is a tribute to the golden age of exploration, having been built to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s return from India.<\/p>\n

Tower of Bel\u00e9m<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Tower of Bel\u00e9m served for many years as Lisbon’s defensive fortification. The tower dates from the sixteenth century, the Age of Discovery, when it was built as a fortress to protect the entrance to the harbour via the Tagus. Over time its defensive role faded and it came to be used as a tax-collecting post and even a prison.<\/p>\n

Santa Justa Lift<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Standing 45 metres tall, the Santa Justa Lift (originally known as the Elevador do Carmo) connects the Baixa with the Chiado neighbourhood and is one of Lisbon’s must-visit tourist attractions.<\/p>\n

Commerce Square<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Commerce Square is Lisbon’s most important square. It stands on the site of the Royal Palace before it was destroyed by the Great Earthquake. Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With more than eight centuries of history, the Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge (Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge) is visible from almost every point in the city. Inside the complex you must visit the Torre de Ulisses, from which you can enjoy a 360\u00b0 panoramic view of the city.<\/p>\n

25 de Abril Bridge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The 25 de Abril Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Europe. It is named after the revolution that, on that same date in 1974, restored democracy to Portugal.<\/p>\n

Feira da Ladra<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The \u00abFeira da Ladra\u00bb \u2014 roughly translated as the \u00abThieves’ Market\u00bb \u2014 is a flea market offering a wide variety of items ranging from antique cameras to second-hand clothing. It is held every Tuesday and Saturday from the morning onwards. In the surrounding area we recommend visiting Parque Clara, also known as Jardim Botto Machado.<\/p>\n

Fado Museum<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Lisbon Fado Museum is located in Alfama, the neighbourhood where this traditional Portuguese singing style was born and developed \u2014 it has since become Lisbon’s most popular tourist experience. At this museum you will learn the history of fado from its origins and its evolution right up to the present day.<\/p>\n
