The Region of Murcia is one of the most beautiful areas in Spain and yet remains one of the great unknowns. If you ask people about Murcia, they will probably mention La Manga del Mar Menor \u2014 but they will know nothing of the city’s most important corners, the wild beaches of Mazarr\u00f3n, the history of Cartagena, or the beauty of Sierra Espu\u00f1a. If you are travelling to Murcia on your school trip and want to explore the region in depth, read on.<\/p>\n

The city of Murcia was founded during Muslim rule on the banks of the River Segura. It is a place full of life and multiculturalism. On your end-of-year trip you should cover the most important points of the regional capital, such as the museums, the impressive Cathedral, and the Real Casino de Murcia. Bear in mind, however, that you won’t truly enjoy it to the full unless you leave time to wander without purpose and discover the bustling streets of Traper\u00eda and Plater\u00eda.<\/p>\n
We begin our tour at the Paseo del Malec\u00f3n<\/strong>. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it originally served to contain the floodwaters of the River Segura. Today it has become a beautiful promenade where visitors can enjoy the lively atmosphere and wonderful views of the city. From here you can visit the Plaza Cardenal Belluga<\/strong>, the square of Murcia Cathedral and the nerve centre of the capital.<\/p>\n The Cathedral of Murcia<\/strong> is an unmissable (and free) visit on your 3-day end-of-year trip to Murcia. It is the jewel of the city. Built on the site of the former Great Mosque in 1467, the Cathedral combines different architectural styles including Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance. Inside there are 23 chapels, and the remains of Alfonso X rest within its walls.<\/p>\n You can then visit the Real Casino de Murcia<\/strong>, which surprises all who step inside. It is a blend of artistic styles characteristic of the 19th and 20th centuries. From its origins it has stood out as a meeting place for distinguished and select individuals who gathered to share hobbies and interests within their social circles.<\/p>\n The Teatro de Romea<\/strong> is the city’s principal theatre and one of the most important in Spain. And the most curious thing about this theatre is its ancient legend. It is said that one of the monks from the Convent of Santo Domingo placed a curse on it, declaring that the theatre would burn down three times: the first without victims, the second with one fatality, and the third when the theatre was completely full \u2014 at which point all those present would perish and the theatre would be destroyed. The first two fires did indeed take place, in 1877 and 1889 respectively, and ever since then one ticket has always been left unsold to ensure the third fire never occurs.<\/p>\n Once the main monuments have been visited, it is time to wander. One of the main promenades is Paseo Alfonso X<\/strong>, a perfect avenue for resting after a long day exploring the city. Afterwards, head to the Plaza de las Flores<\/strong>, one of the liveliest squares in Murcia and the best spot to try some excellent traditional tapas.<\/p>\n For a break during the long day of sightseeing, we recommend a short picnic in Parque Floridablanca<\/strong>. This garden dates from 1849 and was the first public green space in Spain. You also cannot miss the two most famous and historic streets in Murcia, Calle Traper\u00eda and Calle Plater\u00eda<\/strong> \u2014 a lively area brimming with life and traditional shops.<\/p>\n And to round off the day in style, you must visit the famous Quitapesares<\/strong> rooftop terrace and the Santuario de la Fuensanta<\/strong>, from where you can watch a stunning sunset over the city of Murcia. A place where you can also sample the full range of traditional Murcian cuisine.<\/p>\n On your second day you can head to the coast for a swim in the Mediterranean, beach games, or all manner of water-based multi-adventure activities. Don’t think for a moment that Murcia’s coast and beaches are limited to La Manga \u2014 nothing could be further from the truth. The Costa C\u00e1lida is one of the most diverse coastlines in the Levante, with some of the most unspoilt beaches to be found anywhere. Here are all the options you can consider for your day of sun, sea, and sand.<\/p>\n On one side we have the Mar Menor, a great lagoon \u2014 a salt lake or small inland sea \u2014 unique in the whole of Spain. It has 170 square kilometres of warm, calm, and shallow waters, ideal for all kinds of water sports, snorkelling, and diving. It has a rich diversity of marine fauna and flora, which it is essential to care for and protect when visiting the Mar Menor.<\/p>\n Another perfect and highly educational option, just a few kilometres from La Manga, is the Calblanque Natural Park \u2014 a vast expanse of open sand swept by the Poniente winds and broken up by several unspoilt coves. It is an example of an uncontaminated Mediterranean ecosystem with bright sands, dark cliffs, and fossil dunes of great geological interest, home to numerous seabirds.<\/p>\n Further south lie the areas of Mazarr\u00f3n and \u00c1guilas \u2014 virtually untouched territories still waiting to be explored. The journey begins in Bolnuevo, where strange sandstone formations sculpted by the wind create all manner of figures, classified as a Natural Monument of the Region of Murcia. Here you can also visit Punta de Calnegre, a breathtaking and vast landscape that you simply cannot miss. Mazarr\u00f3n has 35 km of fantastic beaches \u2014 both urban and secluded \u2014 including La Isla, Bah\u00eda, Nares, El Castellar, and Playa de Bolnuevo.<\/p>\n Another essential stop on your 3-day school trip to Murcia is Cartagena. A genuine Murcian gem with treasures such as the Roman Theatre, the Castillo de la Concepci\u00f3n, the house of Isaac Peral, the Naval and Archaeological Museum, the cathedral, and the Sea Wall. Its strategic coastal location has made it, throughout history \u2014 over 3,000 years of it! \u2014 home to ancient civilisations, who have left behind highly valuable artistic heritage.<\/p>\n This city, the second most important after Murcia, has a rich cultural offering throughout the year and hosts music and film festivals of outstanding quality. One of its most important celebrations is the Festival of Carthaginians and Romans, held at the end of September, which recreates the Roman conquest of Cartagena in 209 BC. For nine days, the city’s inhabitants dress in traditional costumes to re-enact the battles, and the troops march through the streets. A wonderful time to pay the city a visit!<\/p>\n Finally, to round off your 3-day school trip to Murcia, you absolutely must take a trip to Cabo de Palos, near Cartagena. Both the cape itself and its surroundings are well worth a visit: the lighthouse, the village, and the nearby coves.
