What better place to organise a summer tent camp than at a venue called Aula de la Naturaleza? This is the setting for the Navarredonda summer camp, on the outskirts of the town of the same name. Aula de la Naturaleza is a facility managed by Navarredonda council and leased to Natuaventura Ocio y Tiempo Libre throughout the month of July for the running of camps. As such, it holds all the necessary permits and receives appropriate, regular maintenance to enable leisure and camping activities to take place. The Aula de la Naturaleza operates throughout the year, hosting groups. It is a dynamic, fully equipped space designed to offer a fortnight’s stay with all the comfort needed for a genuine experience in nature. It benefits from the natural protection afforded by its location within the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park.<\/p>\n

The Aula de la Naturaleza where the Navarredonda summer camp takes place is an enclosed site that houses both the participants and the team of group leaders. In this way, both the activities and the supervision of daily communal life are managed by a team of professionals. The Aula has ample space for pitching the tents that will accommodate children and group leaders alike. Within the site, just a few metres from the tents, there are several buildings that provide the technical support needed to run the camp. These include the kitchen building, a dining hall with capacity for 180 people, and the shower and toilet facilities. The camp also benefits from a storage area for the equipment needed for activities, as well as a first-aid kit and other essentials for day-to-day camp life.<\/p>\n

How is a tent camp organised?<\/b><\/h2>\n

But how exactly is a tent camp organised? This is the most common question asked by parents who are not yet familiar with how the Navarredonda camp works. And although the concern is perfectly understandable at first, it soon becomes clear that the Navarredonda summer camp operates in much the same way as camps held in cabins or a hostel. The only difference is the greater contact with nature and a fully immersive experience in a spectacular natural setting like the Sierra de Gredos. To run a summer tent camp, the first requirement is a site properly equipped for this purpose, along with good quality tents \u2014 both of which are guaranteed at Navarredonda. The tents used at camp are inspected a few weeks before the start to ensure they are in good condition.<\/p>\n

The tents are pitched on the first day, and throughout the camp they are readjusted at certain points to ensure they remain in good shape. They have a capacity for four people, but are normally shared among groups of three so that children have a little more space for their rucksacks. The allocation of tents is done in accordance with age groups. There are therefore distinct zones within the camping area: one for the younger children, one for the middle group, and one for the older participants. In this way, the team of group leaders knows which space each group is in, and places their own tents close to each division. Participants, in turn, know from the very first day which tents belong to the group leaders. Each tent has a designated group leader responsible for the children sharing it.<\/p>\n

Day-to-day life at a tent camp<\/b><\/h2>\n

As outlined above, each tent has a designated group leader. This is fundamental to the day-to-day running of the camp and its smooth operation. Tents are an unusual form of accommodation for participants. It is therefore especially important that the team of group leaders helps children settle in and adapt during the first few days, particularly for the youngest. This adaptation is made possible through the tent leader system. This group leader is the primary point of reference for a group of children sharing a tent, and is the person who gets to know them most closely. They speak with the children every day after activities to find out how they got on and how they are feeling. In this way, the team of group leaders is aware of each participant’s progress from day one.<\/p>\n

The Navarredonda camp is structured around three activity slots: morning, afternoon, and evening. Four meals are provided: breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack, and dinner. In addition to the activities, there are also free periods during which children have the option to join in games organised by the group leaders, or to have time to themselves. During these moments, participants enjoy time for themselves \u2014 to socialise and engage in free play. The team of group leaders lives alongside them throughout the camp, so they too take part in these moments, creating an atmosphere of trust that in many cases is precisely what encourages children to return to camp summer after summer.<\/p>\n
