\u00abIs my child old enough to go to camp?\u00bb The answer is not found simply on a calendar. Chronological age matters, but emotional maturity matters just as much.<\/strong> This guide helps you understand what to expect at each age and which type of camp fits each stage of development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Developmental age: what is expected at each stage<\/h2>\n

6-7 years: first independence<\/h3>\n

They can shower alone, get dressed alone and know how to eat at a shared table. They need a camp with very attentive group leaders and clear routines. The first camp should be short and\/or close to home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

8-10 years: the golden age for camp<\/h3>\n

Sufficient independence, a thirst for adventure and not yet into pre-adolescence. This is probably the age range where children enjoy and learn the most at camp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

11-13 years: the group is everything<\/h3>\n

The peer group starts to matter more than the activity itself. This is the time for camps with a strong social experience: team tasks, evening sessions and long team challenges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

14-17 years: the teen camp<\/h3>\n

They seek physical challenges (surfing, technical climbing), independence and an intense social life. Camps such as Santander Surf work especially well, combining technical activity with greater autonomy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

If it is their first camp:<\/strong> choose a short or nearby destination (10 days in Santander, Madrid or Cuenca). This reduces the psychological barrier of \u00abso far away for so many days\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If they are 7-12 and love the outdoors:<\/strong> Gredos, Navarredonda or Navatormes — tent or tipi accommodation and intense contact with nature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If they are 11-15 and want a social experience with peers:<\/strong> fortnightly camps build strong group bonds thanks to their duration. Madrid Multi and Cuenca are a good fit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If they are 13-17 and looking for a challenge:<\/strong> Santander Surf 10 Days or the Fortnight, with an official surf course and excursions to Santillana del Mar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The factor that counts most<\/h3>\n

Beyond age, the decisive factor is the child’s own desire to go. A 12-year-old who does not want to attend will have a harder time than an 8-year-old who is eager to go. When the decision belongs to the participant, camp starts with the advantage already secured.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nIs it better if they go with a cousin or a friend?<\/summary>\n

It depends. Having a familiar companion makes the first few days easier, but it can sometimes hold them back from opening up to new friendships. If the child is shy, it helps; if they are sociable, they can go alone without any problem.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nIs there a maximum age?<\/summary>\n

17 is the maximum age for most camps in the catalogue. Beyond that, former campers often return as trainee activity leaders in our leadership development programme.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nWhat is the leader-to-participant ratio?<\/summary>\n

1 group leader per 8 participants, in groups of 40-50 campers maximum, organised by age.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nHow do calls and mobiles work?<\/summary>\n

Mobiles are permitted but collected on arrival and returned every 3-4 days for calls home. The team also publishes a daily diary on social media so families can follow the day-to-day.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nHow many meals are there and what is the food like?<\/summary>\n

Four meals a day (breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner), with our own kitchen at the venue, home-style cooking and menus adapted to allergies and intolerances.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nIs pocket money needed?<\/summary>\n

We recommend between 20 and 30 € per participant for incidental expenses (shops on excursions, souvenirs, etc.). The money is kept safe by the group leaders.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n
