Barcelona, Spain’s cosmopolitan capital par excellence, is renowned for its art and architecture. Organising an end-of-year trip to Barcelona is a perfect option for secondary school and sixth-form pupils, thanks to all the cultural and leisure activities on offer. On a school trip — which typically lasts between 3 and 5 days — you probably won’t be able to fit everything in, so you will need to prioritise the most important locations or the ones that best match the tastes, interests and needs of your school group. From Natuaventura, here is our comprehensive guide to organising your end-of-year trip to Barcelona, so that everything is planned well in advance and goes off without a hitch.
Teachers are usually the ones who take the lead in getting the end-of-year trip off the ground: choosing the best destinations, finding the most suitable accommodation, planning the activities and the trip schedule, selecting the itinerary that suits the group’s needs, arranging transport, communicating with families, and so on. All of this brings extra worries that teachers carry with them every school year. That is why at Natuaventura we want to offer the best destination guides and help you find, book and plan the perfect end-of-year trip for your school. Where to Stay on Your End-of-Year Trip to Barcelona?
In Barcelona, as in any major city, there is a wide variety of accommodation to suit every type and every budget: hostels, youth hostels, hotels, campsites. The choice of accommodation will always depend on factors such as the time of year you are travelling to Barcelona, the location in or near the city, and the activities and excursions you want to do.
Although it may seem like a fairly straightforward decision, accommodation is one of the key elements of any school trip. It will become the group’s makeshift «home» during their days away. For some pupils it may be the first time they have travelled in a group away from home and family, which is why choosing comfortable, welcoming and safe accommodation is very important for keeping the students settled — and their families reassured.
We also need to consider the services included and the indoor and outdoor spaces available: rooms for group activities and assemblies, breakfasts and dinners included before and after daily excursions, gardens or outdoor courtyards for free time, spacious rooms that give pupils a sense of independence and privacy, and a location with easy access by both public and private transport. Here is a list of some of the best value-for-money hotels and hostels in Barcelona:
- Hostal BCN Port
- Studio Hostel
- Casa Gracia
- Primavera Hostel
- Hotel Eurostars Lex
- Mellow Hostel Barcelona
- Sant Jordi Hostels Gracia
- Hotel Catalonia Park Güell
- HelloBCN Hostel
- Hotel Ilunion Barcelona
What Time of Year is Best for an End-of-Year Trip to Barcelona?
The high season for visiting Barcelona is between April and October. During spring and summer a number of music festivals take place, such as Sónar and Primavera Sound, alongside popular celebrations such as the Verbena de Sant Joan and, in September, Barcelona’s patron saint festival, La Mercè. Barcelona’s temperatures are generally quite mild throughout the year, so there is no obstacle to travelling at any time. That said, if you choose March or April, the city will probably be far less crowded than in other months, making it easier to visit tourist and cultural sites without long queues. From September onwards, once the summer tourist season ends, it once again becomes an ideal time to get to know Barcelona on your end-of-year trip.
