What to visit in Lisbon on your school trip?

Visiting the Portuguese capital will require prior preparation and planning, owing to the number and variety of places to see in the city. And, as with all short trips, priorities must be set. This can be somewhat subjective, as it will depend on the group’s interests, age and needs. How do you organise a school trip by choosing the most relevant tourist attractions?

To summarise, here is a list of Lisbon’s popular monuments:

  • Tower of Belém
  • Feira da Ladra
  • Fado Museum
  • Jerónimos Monastery
  • São Jorge Castle
  • Commerce Square
  • Elevador de Santa Justa
  • Bairro Alto
  • Alfama
  • Miradouro de Santa Luzia
  • Lisbon Cathedral
  • Eduardo VII Park

Getting around Lisbon

Public transport in Lisbon works very well. It is fast, comfortable and reasonably priced, which means we can move around the city’s tourist attractions with ease — a real advantage on a school trip:

  • Trams: a few tram lines remain in some of the old quarter’s neighbourhoods. The tram has become the tourist transport par excellence, with tram line 28 standing out in particular — it passes through the main tourist areas of the Baixa, Alfama and the Chiado, and, also by virtue of its age and tradition, is a tourist attraction in its own right. A single journey costs €2.90.
  • Metro: this is the fastest and cheapest option for getting around Lisbon, though it does not reach some of the most touristy areas, such as Belém and Alfama. It is fast, clean and connects the main areas of the modern city centre. A single ticket costs €1.50, and a day pass is €6.40.
  • Trains: if you are spending more than 2 days in Lisbon, you will probably want to spend time outside the city and visit the famous towns of Sintra and Cascais. For this, the suburban trains are the best option.
  • Boats: Lisbon is a riverside city, so the boat is another fairly common means of transport for connecting the two banks of the River Tagus. Depending on the route taken, there are catamarans (for passengers only) or ferries that can carry vehicles. A must if you want to cross to the other bank of the Tagus, allowing you to visit the Cristo Rei in Cacilhas or Trafaria. There are three ferry terminals: Belém, Cais do Sodré and Terreiro do Paço.
  • Lifts and funiculars: alongside the trams, nothing is more representative of Lisbon than its lifts and funiculars that carry you up and down the city. The most important ones are:
    • Elevador de Santa Justa
    • Ascensor da Bica
    • Ascensor da Glória
