What to visit in Lisbon on your school trip?

Visiting the Portuguese capital will require a previous preparation and programming, due to the number and variety of places that exist in the city. And, like in any short trip, you should prioritize what is most important. This can be somewhat subjective, because everything will depend on the interests of the group, their age or their needs. How to organize the end-of-year trip choosing the most relevant tourist spots?

To summarize, here is a list of the most popular monuments in Lisbon:

  • Belém Tower
  • Ladra Fair
  • Fado Museum
  • Jerónimos Monastery
  • George’s Castle
  • Commerce Square
  • Santa Justa Elevator
  • Bairro Alto
  • Alfama
  • Santa Lucia Viewpoint
  • Lisbon Cathedral
  • Eduardo VII Park

Transportation in Lisbon

Public transportation in Lisbon works quite well. It is fast, comfortable and reasonably priced, so it allows us to move very well around the tourist spots of the city, something very advantageous for the end-of-year trip:

  • Streetcars: there are streetcar lines left through some neighborhoods in the old town. The streetcar has remained as the tourist means of transport, highlighting the streetcar line 28, which runs through the main tourist areas of Baixa, Alfama and Chiado and, also because of its antiquity and tradition, is a tourist attraction itself. A trip costs 2,90€.
  • Metro: it is the fastest and cheapest option to move around Lisbon, although it does not reach some of the most touristic areas, such as Belém and Alfama. It is fast, clean and connects the main areas of the modern city center. The single ticket costs 1,50€, and the day ticket costs 6,40€.

Trains and Elevators.

  • Trains: if you spend more than 2 days in Lisbon, you will probably want to spend time outside the city and visit the famous Sintra and Cascais. Local trains are the best option for this.
  • Boats: Lisbon is a river city, so the boat is another common means of transport to communicate the two banks of the Tagus River. Depending on which route we take there are catamarans, only for passengers, or ferries that allow you to take cars. It is essential to use it if you want to cross to the other bank of the Tagus, so you can visit Christ the King in Cacilhas or Trafaria. There are three piers: Belém, Cais do Sodré and Terreiro do Paço.
  • Elevators: next to the streetcars, the most emblematic of Lisbon are the elevators that transport you from the top to the bottom and from the bottom to the top of the city. The most important are:
    • Santa Justa Elevator
    • Bica Elevator
    • Gloria Elevator
