Benefits of a Primary School Trip

When we talk about school trips or end-of-year trips, we always picture that once-in-a-lifetime journey at the end of our final school year — the grand finale of a whole chapter of our lives. However, school group trips during primary school years are becoming increasingly common today. They are an evolution, in keeping with the times, of the classic residential experiences that so many of us once enjoyed — or endured. Here we share some of the benefits and qualities of these school trips, which from our perspective are tremendously positive and beneficial, not only from the children’s point of view.

1.- Children show their true selves

On many occasions, teachers have no contact with children beyond what happens in the classroom. When going on a trip with primary school children and taking part in outdoor activities, the children are no longer «trapped» at their desks and can develop more freely and actively, showing a much more genuine picture of who they are. The teachers themselves — and I speak from personal experience — are often tremendously surprised by the changes in attitude they see, usually for the better, in many of the children.

2.- They learn to live together

For many of these children, this is the first time they have slept away from home, with everything that entails. And it is not just about sleeping. From the moment they wake up, their routines are set aside and they must carry out everyday tasks on their own. A sense of camaraderie and mutual support emerges between them that far surpasses what they usually experience in the classroom. From personal hygiene to the «healthy rivalry» of playing games, everything takes on a special quality during the days of the trip.

3.- The relationship with teachers «normalises» for the better

The distance that exists between teachers and pupils becomes obsolete and distant on these trips. The very nature of outdoor activities, games and learning through play means that children feel closer to and more at ease with their teachers. The teachers, in turn, can watch the children put into practice all the values they work so hard to teach them — with the pride that this brings for educators.

4.- Parents learn too

Following on from point two: for many parents, this is the first time their children have slept away from home. Whilst of course understanding how hard this can be for some families, it is a necessary step in the development of the children — and the parents. Being able to sleep two or three nights away from home is a wonderful milestone in the growth of these «little people», one in which their parents should feel involved and proud.

5.- Non-formal education takes on an active role

Through the games, workshops and outdoor and nature activities that are typically carried out on these school trips, children not only put into practice a host of attitudes and concepts learnt in theory, but also acquire new knowledge almost without realising it — knowledge that stays with them. Learning whilst having fun is the best way to learn, whether you are a child or an adult.
