The 9 Best English Apps for Children

The internet offers a huge number of resources for learning English in a dynamic and enjoyable way. English apps for children are a very useful tool for introducing them to the language or reinforcing what they already know. In this article we have compiled 9 applications that have been recommended for years to help younger learners build their English at their own pace.

Why Support English Learning With Apps

Apps do not replace guided learning, but they are an excellent complement: they let children practise in short sessions using a game mechanic, repeating vocabulary, listening to correct pronunciation and measuring their own progress. Most of the apps we are going to recommend are free and available on both Android and iOS.

The 9 Recommended English Apps for Children

1. Duolingo

App and web portal. An owl guides the child through lessons that measure their level and advance with them. Completely free; you just need to create an account.

2. British Council

Teaching portal with a free mobile app. Access to online English resources, several of them designed specifically for children.

3. PiliPop

Focused on pronunciation: the child says the words and the app corrects mistakes. It also sends a monthly progress report to parents.

4. Play Tales Gold

Storytelling app for Android, free of charge. Ideal for young children: a wide variety of children’s stories to read in English and get their ear accustomed to the language.

5. MeeGenius Children’s Books

Children’s books in English with a narrator function that reads the text aloud. Useful when parents do not have enough English to accompany the reading.

6. The Irregular Project

Free. Specialises in learning irregular verbs — one of the most tedious parts — by turning them into a game.

7. Fun English

Designed for children aged 3 to 10. As the name suggests, it teaches English in an enjoyable way. Also free.

8. English 4 Kids

Focused on expanding English vocabulary. Aimed at younger children and simplifies one of the most demanding aspects of learning.

9. Me divierto en inglés

Free app with popular stories in English, designed for children to learn whilst having fun.

How to Integrate Apps Into a Child’s Routine

What tends to work best is a combination of three ingredients: short sessions, plenty of consistency and a mechanic the child finds motivating. Sessions of 10 to 20 minutes a day with the app that has captured their attention tend to produce better results than long, sporadic sessions.

Apps + an English Camp: The Next Step

Apps are an excellent complement, but the real qualitative leap comes from genuine language immersion. At an English camp, children do not open an app: they live in English from breakfast to the evening programme. At Natuaventura we have two 100% immersion camps with C1 or above activity leaders — Sierra Madrid English Camp and Navatormes English Camp — where what was learnt on screen becomes real life.

Frequently Asked Questions About English Apps for Children

From what age can these apps be used?

It depends on the app. There are options like Fun English designed for children aged 3 to 10, while Duolingo or British Council work better from around 7–8, when the child already reads fluently.

How much screen time is reasonable?

There is no magic number, but short daily sessions (10–20 minutes) tend to be more effective than long, intermittent ones. A little every day is better than a lot once a week.

Do these apps replace a language school or a camp?

No. They are a very useful complement, especially for maintaining the habit and reinforcing vocabulary and pronunciation, but the leap to real conversation comes in immersion environments: lessons with conversation, exchanges and English camps.

Are they safe for children to use unsupervised?

Most are, but it is worth reviewing the account privacy settings, disabling in-app purchases and monitoring use, especially in the first few weeks.

Do they work on both Android and iOS?

Most of these apps are available on both platforms. Some, like Play Tales Gold originally, started on Android only — it is worth checking the current version in each app store before downloading.

Take the Next Step: Real English Immersion

Apps are a good complement, but 100% immersion at a summer camp is what truly accelerates your child’s English.
