Why a Summer Camp Is One of the Best Holiday Options for Children

When the final term arrives, the same question surfaces in many households: what do we do with the children this summer? There are options, of course: screens, video games, extended stays at the grandparents. And there is one option that, after many years of organising it, we consider one of the most complete: the summer camp. This article explains why.

Why a Summer Camp Is a Good Idea

Children finish the school year carrying a heavy load: lessons, exams, extracurricular activities. Rewarding that effort with a good summer is not a luxury — it is logical. A summer camp offers three things that are rarely combined in any other summer option: socialising with peers in a safe environment, an exceptionally wide range of new activities, and growing independence away from the family home.

What Children Take Away

Independence

Packing their own rucksack for an excursion, getting dressed for a water activity, organising themselves to arrive at dinner on time. Small repeated decisions that build confidence.

Socialising

Sharing a room or tent with new companions, resolving disagreements without parental mediation, finding their place in a group. Invisible but fundamental learning.

Outdoor Activity and Variety

Climbing, archery, surfing, natural pools, mountain hikes, treasure hunts and evening shows. In 13–14 days they experience more activities than in an entire school year.

Memories

A camp summer is the kind that sticks. Songs, activity leader nicknames, stories told for months afterwards.

What Parents Gain

Structured peace of mind: the child is in an environment with a 1-to-8 activity leader ratio, 24-hour coordination, an on-site kitchen with adapted menus, and medical assistance nearby. Peace of mind is not just a feeling — it is a protocol.

Information without intrusion: an arrival text message, calls every 3–4 days, a daily social media diary and an office available 10:00–14:00. Families know how their child is doing without disrupting the camp.

Real work-life balance: two weeks or ten days with the child in a good, safe setting makes the summer working period much more manageable for many families.

Growth: when children come home they bring learning that is noticeable throughout the following school year: independence, values such as respect and teamwork, and the ability to solve small challenges on their own.

How to Choose the Right Camp

Not every child is suited to every camp. The choice depends on age, profile (sporty, nature-loving, language-focused, technology-based), type of accommodation (hostel or tent), previous experience (is this their first time away from home?) and the participant’s own preferences. If there is any doubt, our team is happy to help choose based on the individual case.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can they start going to camp?

It depends on the camp. We have options from age 6 (Madrid Multi-Adventure) up to 17 (most camps). Each age group stays with its own cohort, divided by age within each session.

What if my child has never slept away from home?

It is common and not a problem. The first day’s routine is designed so that night arrives after many hours of shared play. Healthy tiredness does most of the work, and the activity leader team supports the adjustment.

How much does a summer camp cost?

The price varies by destination, duration and format. Tent camps (Gredos, Navarredonda) start from €568–598; hostel camps are around €678–748; surf camps in Cantabria or English immersion camps are higher. The price includes accommodation, four meals a day, activities, transport and activity leaders.

What is included in the price?

Accommodation, four daily meals with adapted menus, all programme activities, return transport from Madrid or the departure point, activity leader team and 24-hour coordination. Only the recommended pocket money (€20–30) is excluded.

What if we are not sure which camp is the best fit?

Call the office (10:00–14:00) and we will help you choose based on the child’s age, profile and previous experience. The choice is not trivial and is well worth making with plenty of time to spare.
