The Natural Environment of the Sierra de Gredos

Back to Table of Contents

The Sierra de Gredos belongs to the Central Mountain Range, the cordillera that crosses the Central Plateau, located between the provinces of Salamanca, Ávila, Cáceres, Madrid, and Toledo. Other notable ranges within this system, alongside Gredos, include the Sierra de Guadarrama, Sierra de la Estrella, and Sierra de Ayllón.

SIERRA DE GREDOS REGIONAL PARK

Furthermore, one area of this mountain range is designated as the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. It is situated in the south of the province of Ávila and enjoys protection as a nationally protected natural area.

This park is noted for its rich flora. Its vegetation is typically grouped into oak woodlands (rebollo and holm oak) and pine forests, nourished by rivers such as the Tormes, which flow abundantly through the sierra and create a wealth of bathing spots such as natural pools and rock pools.

It should also be noted that the park’s protected zone encompasses several municipal districts, including Navarredonda de Gredos, Piedralaves, Hoyos del Espino, Hoyos del Collado, El Arenal, and Navacepeda de Tormes, among others.

The Gredos Platform is the main access point to the heart of the regional park and the Gredos Cirque. It is a vehicle car park situated at an altitude of 1,750 m where the old AV-931 road ends. This road, now known as the Carretera de la Plataforma de Gredos, is 12 km long.

The platform is located within the municipal district of San Juan de Gredos, though access is primarily via the start of the aforementioned road, in the village of Hoyos del Espino. Access along this road is regulated and costs 3 euros.

GREDOS CIRQUE

Worthy of mention is the famous Gredos Cirque, a glacial cirque where Pico Almanzor — one of the highest peaks on the Iberian Peninsula and the highest point of the Central Mountain Range — is found. Several stunning glacial lakes are also located here, such as the Cinco Lagunas (Five Lakes) and the Laguna Grande de Gredos. The latter lies beside the Elola mountain refuge, which is well frequented by mountaineers intending to ascend Almanzor.

The Gredos Cirque falls within the river basin of the River Tormes, a tributary of the Duero. For all these reasons, it is one of the most important landscapes within the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park.

Natural Swimming Pools in the Sierra de Gredos

Back to Table of Contents

The rock pools and natural swimming pools of the Sierra de Gredos are oases of freshness in the heart of wild nature. They are formed by the pure mountain water that flows down rivers and streams, creating unique spaces for rest and enjoyment.

Here are the ones we consider most special:

POZO DE LAS PAREDES NATURAL POOL

The Pozo de las Paredes, situated in Navacepeda de Tormes in the Sierra de Gredos, Ávila, is a spectacular natural pool formed by the River Barbellido, surrounded by imposing walls eroded by wind and water.

Known for its icy water, it attracts the bravest visitors who wish to take a dip in its cold waters flowing straight from the Gredos mountains. Also worth mentioning is a remarkable medieval bridge that offers breathtaking views of Navacepeda de Tormes and the mountains, completing the experience with picnic areas ideal for all ages and groups.

It is undoubtedly one of our favourite destinations during our summer camps in the Sierra de Gredos.

CHARCO VERDE (GREEN POOL)

On the River Pelayos, in Guisando, at the foot of the southern face of the Sierra de Gredos, the waters are held back in a small natural pool.

During the summer months, locals take advantage of it to sunbathe and cool off while enjoying the beautiful scenery that the Sierra de Gredos offers. In addition to the Charco Verde, we also recommend the Piscina Natural del Risquillo, also in Guisando.

GARGANTA DE LOS INFIERNOS

The Garganta de los Infiernos Nature Reserve is located in the Jerte Valley, between the Sierra de Tormantos, the southern Sierra de Gredos, and the River Jerte. It is renowned for its waterfalls, cascades, and the giant potholes known as Los Pilones.

Two main attractions stand out: Los Pilones, famous for their unique rock formations; and El Chorrero de la Virgen, a waterfall visible from its viewpoint, though it may dry up in summer.

Although it no longer belongs to Ávila but to Cáceres, it remains part of the magnificent Sierra de Gredos and is only 30 minutes from Barco de Ávila.

CHARCA DE LA NIETA — PIEDRALAVES

The Charca de la Nieta is located in the beautiful village of Piedralaves, Ávila. It is a natural pool formed by a retaining wall across the Garganta Nuño Cojo gorge, ideal for swimming in summer.

It offers two pools: a large, deep one for swimming and play, and a smaller, shallower one that is safe for children, connected by a small waterfall. It is a popular destination during the hot months, prized for its tranquillity and natural beauty.

CHARCA NATURAL DE LOS MOZOS

This small natural pool (not to be confused with the one at Monsagro in Salamanca) is ideal for a refreshing dip in summer. It is located in the municipality of Tormellas, in the province of Ávila.

You can enjoy a pleasant swim in its crystal-clear waters belonging to the Garganta de los Caballeros, where you can spot small trout. The pool is immersed in nature and to reach it you must walk through a path lined with lush trees.

LOS RIVEROS NATURAL POOL, CANDELEDA

In Candeleda, we find the El Raso de Abajo natural pool. Located next to the Los Riveros recreational area in the heart of the Sierra de Gredos, province of Ávila, it offers a beautiful and secluded setting to enjoy a hot summer’s day.

It is complemented by a lovely walk along the River Alberche, near which there is also a river bathing area about 300 metres from the natural pool. This place provides a unique wild-swimming experience in full contact with nature.

RIVER ARBILLAS

Ávila is a popular summer destination known for its streams and natural pools, ideal for a day out in the countryside. In Poyales del Hoyo, the landscapes of the River Arbillas are characterised by pine trees and clear waters, forming part of the Gredos Regional Park.

Although the water is usually cold, there are pools near the road with slightly warmer water. The area also contains natural pools such as the Poza del Caracol, the Charco del Risquillo, and the Charco de los Médicos.

GARGANTA DE VALDEASCAS

The Garganta de Valdeascas is an ideal spot for a walk in contact with nature and, weather permitting, a refreshing swim.

It is a beautiful natural setting located in Navarredonda, in the Sierra de Gredos. It tends to go unnoticed due to its proximity to the Gredos Platform, the starting point for numerous mountain routes.

Nevertheless, it remains one of the best-known and most enjoyed routes, as it rewards the walk almost immediately with a dip in a stunning natural setting. It is an already well-known route on our Gredos summer camps.

ARENAS DE SAN PEDRO NATURAL POOLS

The natural pools of Arenas de San Pedro in Ávila are undoubtedly a more tourist-friendly and family-orientated option. They offer a safe and well-equipped bathing area for all visitors, with a shallower section for children and a deeper one for adults, regulated by dams.

The large pool features amenities such as ladders, showers, and a diving board, sharing the space with river trout visible through the clear water. For those who prefer a wilder setting, nearby you will find the Charco de la Chiva and the Charco Pelayos, offering natural spots with small waterfalls, as well as a restaurant and picnic area at Pelayos.

THE RIVER TORMES AND ITS TRIBUTARIES

To conclude, it is worth noting that there are thousands of natural pools and swimming spots in Gredos. The best advice is simply to follow the rivers and their tributaries.

The one we would highlight most is the River Tormes, which offers incredible bathing spots scattered throughout the area, such as the Charco del Molino and the River Barbellido.

It is as simple as keeping an eye on which rivers flow alongside the campsites where you stay or the roads you travel along. We can assure you they will be magnificent swimming spots.

Routes in the Sierra de Gredos

Back to Table of Contents

The Sierra de Gredos offers a wide variety of hiking routes that allow visitors to explore its rich biodiversity, magnificent landscapes, and the natural beauty of the region.

From easy trails for families to more challenging routes for experienced hikers, it is important to know your ability level, particularly with regard to safety.

LAGUNA GRANDE DE GREDOS — GREDOS CIRQUE ROUTE

The route to the Laguna Grande lies at the glacial heart of the Sierra de Gredos. It is an iconic route offering a unique landscape of tranquillity alongside a glacial lake, surrounded by imposing rocky mountains — no less than the approach to Pico Almanzor, the highest point of the range.

Starting from the Gredos Platform, which has ample parking and facilities, this 7 km round trip is divided into an ascent and a descent. It is marked by a stone path and signposting that guides visitors through points of interest such as the Llano Barbellido plateau, the Fuente de los Cavadores spring, and the Mirador de los Barrerones viewpoint, where the majesty of the landscape can be fully appreciated. After a descent passing the Fuente de los Barrerones spring, you reach the Laguna Grande, concluding the walk at the Elola Refuge, a perfect place to take in the natural beauty of Gredos.

Key details to note:

  • Swimming is strictly prohibited in the glacial lakes as they are nature reserves and must be preserved.
  • For the Elola Refuge, you need to book at least a week in advance by phone to secure your place.
  • There are many alternative routes across the various peaks of the Gredos Cirque; it is important to choose the one that best suits your abilities and preferences.
  • Bivouacking (sleeping outdoors with only a sleeping mat and sleeping bag) is allowed in the surrounding area, but camping with a tent is not, as it is illegal in Spain to pitch a tent in most places (except in specific areas at certain altitudes, so always research your destination and accommodation beforehand).
  • Be responsible and consider your physical condition and capabilities. Although this is not among the most difficult routes, it is a mountain trail where rescue is complicated and would only be possible by helicopter, so always take care and respect the mountain and its challenges.

SENDA DE LAS CINCO LAGUNAS (FIVE LAKES TRAIL)

The classic route to the Cinco Lagunas de Gredos from Navalperal de Tormes offers a spectacular journey through glacial landscapes. It stands out for its natural beauty and technical accessibility outside the snow season, although it becomes more demanding in winter.

This route can be completed in a single day but is recommended over two days to fully enjoy its circular path. It crosses the Garganta del Pinar gorge, revealing breathtaking views and a total elevation gain of 1,000 metres over nearly 25 kilometres. Its technical simplicity combined with the physical challenge makes this route an unforgettable experience and one of the most iconic for hiking enthusiasts in the Sierra de Gredos.

SENDA DE LOS PESCADORES IN ARENAS DE SAN PEDRO (FISHERMEN’S PATH)

The Senda de los Pescadores, located in Arenas de San Pedro, is a notable circular route famed for its impressive scenery, refreshing pools, and rich vegetation, ideal for enjoying in summer. Accompanied by the River Pelayo and surrounded by varied flora, the path offers manageable stretches alongside more challenging sections, particularly for those travelling with children.

Starting at the Río Pelayo recreational area, visitors can admire the Sierra de Gredos and discover charming spots such as the Charco Calderillo and the Pozo Quirol. The latter features a picturesque footbridge crossing the gorge, making this trail a memorable experience of connection with nature.

RUTA DE LOS PESCADORES IN CANDELEDA (FISHERMEN’S ROUTE)

The Senda de Pescadores is a historic route once used by fishermen to catch trout in the Garganta de Santa María, ascending towards the ancient Roman-era Puente del Puerto bridge. The return journey is made via the Trocha Real, crossing natural landscapes alongside the Garganta Santa María, including a crossing via a Tibetan bridge and another section with fixed ropes to negotiate the Garganta Blanca gorge.

The route culminates at the Roman bridge over the Garganta Lóbrega, before continuing along a path that passes the Fuente del Sauce, an ancient watering trough, descending some 300 metres back to the village of Candeleda, marking the end of this scenic traverse.

RUTA CHORRO DE LA VENTERA

The route from Madrigal de la Vera, in Cáceres, starting on the right bank of La Garganta de Minchones, is a must-do experience that leads through the Finca del Burreño towards the historic and ruined Puente de la Umbriela bridge. Along the way, you can admire the impressive cascade of the Chorro de la Ventera waterfall from the Cerros de Tarraces hills.

The route continues following the stream to reach highlights such as the Charco Verde, the Corte del Cancho in Talaveruela, and the Portilla de los Escarbaeros. It passes through unique natural landscapes and areas of outstanding beauty including the Majadas del Soto, the Garganta Seca, and Los Huertos de Ceporrino.

RUTA GARGANTA VALDEASCAS

Reaching the Garganta de Valdeascas, located in Navarredonda de Gredos, is straightforward: follow the road from the petrol station near Navarredonda as far as the Camping Navagredos, then turn left. This route, noted for its waterfalls and pools, is perfect for visiting throughout the year (especially in summer) and is particularly suited to families with children and large groups.

The walk, though continuous and somewhat rocky, is not excessively difficult. It offers a stunning natural environment with ‘granite beaches‘ that invite you to rest and swim in their refreshing waters, making this a memorable and accessible experience for everyone.

It is undoubtedly one of our favourite routes to do with children on our Gredos summer camps.

RUTA LAS CHORRERAS

We head to Hoyos del Espino and the Sierra de Gredos for a circular route of 10.5 kilometres with minimal elevation gain, leading to the waterfalls known as Las Chorreras del Tormes, departing from Navarredonda via the Camino Navatormes.

Leaving behind landmarks such as the bullring and the Navagredos campsite, we follow the River Tormes to the right, passing the Navatormes and Las Maliciosas campsites until we reach the spectacular setting of Las Chorreras, where numerous crystal-clear waterfalls can be admired. The route continues parallel to the Arroyo de Mesegoso stream, concluding in Barajas, in the southern area of Navarredonda de Gredos, Ávila.

SENDA DEL PINAR DE NAVARREDONDA (NAVARREDONDA PINE FOREST TRAIL)

The trail through the Pinar de Navarredonda de Gredos, surrounded by centuries-old Scots pines, forms a unique ecosystem that is home to rich biodiversity, particularly birds such as the great spotted woodpecker and the long-eared owl.

This path, easy to walk and almost entirely flat, is dotted with information panels and stone benches for resting and enjoying nature. Starting from the Camino Prado Viejo, near the sports area and the municipal swimming pool, visitors can refresh themselves at the Fuente de la Ladera spring before exploring the surroundings of the Parador Nacional de Gredos, the Fuente del Rey spring, and Peña Histórica — a post-Civil War historic site that today invites leisure and relaxation.

RUTA A LOS HERMANITOS DE TEJEA

This hiking route begins near Candeleda, bordering Castile and León and Extremadura, offering a particularly beautiful walk in spring when the flowers are in bloom.

It crosses the Garganta de Tejea gorge and passes through the Prado de la Carrera, the oldest Vettonian hillfort in the area, heading towards the summits of Los Hermanitos de Tejea and the Majada de los Blázquez, now a mountain refuge. Although the route has several springs, it is advisable to carry water, especially in summer.

RUTA PUENTE DEL DUQUE AND THE SOURCE OF THE RIVER TORMES

The route between the Puente del Duque bridge and the source of the River Tormes, in the Prado Tormejón meadow, offers a walk of over six kilometres through beautiful landscapes within the Gredos Regional Park.

This path, accessible to all visitors and not overly crowded, is characterised by its tranquillity, broken only by the sounds of nature — cowbells and flowing water. Near Hoyos del Espino, the route begins close to the Mesegosillo estate and leads visitors to enjoy unspoilt nature, including the Charco del Cardenillo, a magical spot just a short distance from the start. This walk also features as part of the ‘Músicos en la Naturaleza’ festival, which attracts thousands of people each year.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Back to Table of Contents

A visit to the Sierra de Gredos requires preparation to make the most of the experience. These practical tips will help you plan your trip, ensuring both safety and enjoyment.

Highlights:

What to Bring:

The importance of appropriate equipment cannot be overstated — from suitable footwear to sun protection and enough water for your chosen routes. Always bring a warm layer; in Gredos, you will never regret it.

Best Time to Visit:

The Sierra de Gredos offers a thousand options throughout the year to enjoy the charm of each season. However, we recommend summer for the widest range of routes and the chance to swim in its natural pools. That said, do not be caught off guard — even if the days are warm, the nights can still be quite cool.

Conservation Guidelines:

Much of the Sierra de Gredos’s charm lies in its nature and conservation. It is therefore important to visit responsibly, leaving every spot in a better condition than you found it: do not litter or pollute the water. Be aware and informed about which areas permit swimming and which do not, as some may be protected nature reserves.

Where to Sleep:

We always recommend living the experience to the full, so the ideal option is to stay at campsites (we recommend the Camping de Gredos and Camping Navagredos) or outdoors via classic BIVOUACKING (sleeping with only a mat and a sleeping bag). However, if you plan to bring a tent, be aware that in Spain pitching a tent is illegal in most locations (with the exception of private land such as campsites and certain designated high-altitude mountain spots).

Refuges and youth hostels are also a good option, particularly when the cold makes camping impractical. Bear in mind that mountain refuges, above all, were created for mountaineers and hikers to rest, so their primary purpose should not be forgotten. It is also worth noting that all options tend to be quite affordable.

Research and Plan Your Trip:

Whenever you visit a new place with so many options, find out which ones interest you most and best suit your circumstances and preferences. That way you can set off from a clear starting point and create your own guide, since trying to do everything at once can be overwhelming.

Once you have your plan, look into practical details — for example: whether any road charges apply (such as the Plataforma road toll); whether any natural pool car park requires payment; useful route websites such as Wikiloc; and whether your destination has refreshment stands and picnic tables for eating.
