Children’s Summer Camps: When Should You Book?

Children’s summer camps — for children from age 6 or 7 — are one of the most complete formative experiences a young child can have. The most common question among families is not whether to sign up, but when to book and which destinations are suitable for the youngest children. This article addresses both: minimum ages by destination in the Natuaventura catalogue and when to secure a place.

What We Mean by a Children’s Summer Camp

A children’s summer camp is the first residential format a child can access, normally between ages 6 and 11–12, before moving on to youth camps. In that age range, what matters most is not the exact age but the combination of basic independence, suitable accommodation and an adequate leader ratio. In all Natuaventura camps the ratio is 1 group leader for every 8 participants, groups are divided by age and rooms are single-gender.

Children’s Destinations in the Natuaventura Catalogue

Madrid Multi-Adventure · from age 6

Albergue Sierra Norte (Manjirón), 20,000 m² enclosed grounds. Wooden cabins with bunk beds, covered dining room, climbing wall and swimming pool 200 m away. One of the best options for a young child’s first time.

Sierra Madrid English Camp · from age 6

Same hostel, with 100% English language immersion and activity leaders at C1 level or above, or native speakers. Three turns: two fortnights in July and a ten-day stay from 1 to 10 August.

Cuenca Multi-Adventure · from age 6

Albergue Alta-Lai in Casillas de Ranera. Cabins and hostel accommodation, indoor dining room, site with swimming pools within the accommodation. Excursion to Terra Mítica.

Rest of the Catalogue · from age 7

Gredos, Navarredonda, Navatormes, Daroca and Santander Surf Fortnight have a minimum age of 7. Some go up to 16 (Gredos) or 17 (others).

When to Book: The Calendar Factor

Booking early is not just financial advice — it is a practical matter. Younger groups (ages 6–9) tend to fill up faster than teenage groups in camps with a wide age range. Language immersion formats (Sierra Madrid English Camp and Navatormes English Camp) and the first July fortnight are the most in demand.

January–February: season registrations open. Best voluntary cancellation conditions (up to 1 March, minimal charges).

February–April: the optimal booking window. Most families confirm a place during this period and the group is still forming.

April–May: the English turns and the 1st July fortnight begin to close. For younger ages, the lower-capacity cabins may already have no availability.

May–June: last-minute bookings subject to actual availability. It is easier to find a place in the 2nd fortnight than the 1st.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a summer camp safe for a 6-year-old?

Yes, provided the camp is designed for that age. The three Natuaventura camps from age 6 meet the safety framework and have been designed with young children in mind.

What if they have never slept away from home?

That is very common. The first-day routine eases that transition and the healthy tiredness from the day means bedtime comes after many hours of shared play.

What if they cry?

This is normal in the first few days, especially at bedtime. The group leaders support children through that moment and the family receives regular contact to offer reassurance.

How long does it take to settle in?

The vast majority of children settle within the first 24–48 hours. After that, the days go by quickly and the journey home is usually the most emotional moment.

Better a ten-day stay or a fortnight for a first time?

If your child is between 6 and 12, the 3rd Ten-Day Stay of the Sierra Madrid English Camp (1–10 August) is a gentle 10-day introduction with English immersion. If they prefer classic multi-adventure, a first fortnight at Madrid Multi-Adventure is the most well-supported option.
